In 2005, the FIA European Touring Car Cup was introduced as an end of season event where competitors from major national touring car championships around Europe.
These include Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia,
Sweden and the UK. Drivers who have competed in at least 50 percent of the
races in their national championships are eligible to compete in cars complying
to the FIA's Super 2000 and Super Production regulations.
2005 champions at the newly extended Vallelunga circuit in Italy were, in the Super 2000 category, Swedish driver Rickard
Goransson (BMW 320i), and in Super Production, Italian Lorenzo Falessi (Alfa Romeo 147).
For 2006, the event moved to the well known Estoril circuit in Portugal, which as recently as 2002 and 2003 hosted rounds of the FIA European Touring Car Championship. In 2003 the Alfa Romeo 156 GTa was the dominant car, with Garbiele Tarquini taking
two wins, and team-mates Nicola Larini and Roberto Colciago taking the remaining
podium positions in the races.
